This musical was premiered on Broadway in 1985 and received seven Tony Awards. The Deaf West Theatre version of the production was performed on Broadway in 2003 for a limited run, featuring deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing actors. The entire show is signed in American Sign Language and at the same time is spoken by hearing actors. It was performed first in Los Angeles (Deaf West Theatre) in 2001, receiving many awards, and it was moved to Mark Taper Theater (Los Angeles) in 2002. The show is currently touring nationally.

Since it was a limited run at Roundabout Theatre, it only run two and a half months and still the show was nominated for 2003 Tony Award for the Best Revival Musical and Best Supporting Musical Actor. The story is about the adventures that a 12-year-old Huckleberry Finn and a runaway slave, Jim, experienced traveling down Mississippi river, and how Huck resolves the conflict between his heart and mind.
