I asked Dan some additional questions regarding the production. Enjoy!
I've been researching about the original production and I found out that your Dad has appeared in the show also as a replacement cast. Did you get to perform with him? How was it?
So, yes, performing with my father was incredibly special. I grew up watching him perform everything from Hamlet to Cyrano, so you can imagine what a great experience it was to share something like that with him. He`s on a TV show in the states now called "Scrubs" and having a good time there as well. He`s just a super guy.
I love listening to OBC CD, I still wish they have recorded this DWT production too. Which number do you enjoy to perform? Did you audition for DWT production or did they call you? Which song did you sing at the audition?
I think "Worlds Apart" is still my favorite these days, because of how well the theme fits with the story, and the harmonies are really fun to perform. And yes, I had to audition - just like everybody else! They were very nice, and I was reluctant at first, but I realized how special this production was - and it all worked out!
I think I just played and sang Muddy Water, read a couple of scenes and did a little signing... Ty was not there.
Many people have said that your voice (Huck) is surprising the same (young) as we hear on the OBC CD, but you are 20 years older and have kids now. Do you think having your sons on your own has any influence on your performance as Huck? Do you see Huck's character differently 20 yrs later?
One of the really cool things about doing this version has been including my kids. As you might imagine, this is a very warm and welcoming community, and they were especially so with my kids. They pick up signs so fast, and there is nothing like a kid signing to warm your heart! I think perhaps that being a father I look at huck now with a slightly fatherly eye in the show. I know what he has been through and having "written" the story, I know what's coming, too!
There is a lot of emotional overlapping in this production for me. With my children - as with audiences in general I feel incredibly thankful that I am helping expose them to a segment of the society that is generally considered inaccessible somehow. It is just the opposite. With very little effort an entire world can open itself to you and the world is suddenly smaller....
Dan, thank you SO MUCH for sharing your personal stories. You are the best!
